July 30 – Israeli Jets and Artillery

July 30
Israeli Jets and Artillery

Bob hears Israel’s own artillery. Following the Holocaust is was “music to my ears.”

Bob describing hearing Israeli Artillery as Music to his Ears

July 30, 1957
Tuesday at night
Dear Mom Dad & Alan,

I’m still on the Kibbutz in the central Galilee someplace near an Israeli airbase. During the day I again heard & saw jets roar by. It looked wonderful & reassuring. In the distance one could hear the roar of heavy artillery at a practice range. That also was music to my ears.

In the afternoon we were taken on a tour of Nazareth where all the Christian Churches are located. It is an all Arab City of 14,000 loyal Israelis. I had many talks with them, many of whom knew Hebrew & all the youngsters who of course knew Hebrew. The city itself made all the other cities look sick for bargaining & cheating tourists. There’s not much else to write except I hope everything is OK there as it is here.

Love Bob

“In the distance one could hear the roar of heavy artillery at a practice range. That also was music to my ears”
1957 was 12 years after the Holocaust. Hearing a Jewish army practicing with heavy artillery was like music to Bob’s years.

My son Dov serves in the Artillery branch of the Israeli Army, which makes my father very proud.
